Chatteris is a market
town with a strong belief in its future,
yet it has
a pride in its past and a desire to keep
its distinctive Fenland character.
It is a tranquil, safe, welcoming, growing
country town right for children and families.
It invests resources in its young, money
in its improvement, time in its people and
thought for its community's safety and prosperity.
Here you can read about the experiences
of living and working in Chatteris, the
town's one and a half thousand year history
and how the residents of today's Chatteris
enjoy their leisure time.
Although traditionally associated with the
growth and distribution of high-quality
fruit and vegetables, Chatteris also attracts
an ever-growing number of new businesses.
Food testing and analysis is growing in
importance as is engineering. A continuing
strong demand for land in South Cambridgeshire,
coupled with lower prices in Fenland, has
increased interest in Chatteris as a business
and investment location.
The major industrial estates will soon be
home for the new South Fens Business Centre
- offices aimed at attracting and supporting
'knowledge based' businesses. Set in landscaped
grounds on a two-acre site, this imaginative
project will stimulate local business development
and growth and open up other serviced industrial
land for investment.
Chatteris provides a steady platform for
growth and business opportunities based

The
Shopping Scene
Such is the diversity of over 40 shops in
the centre of Chatteris alone that most everyday
family needs can easily be met without leaving
the town.
Free parking, easy access and the friendly
personal service offered by Chatteris retailers
make shopping a more relaxed and enjoyable
experience. And don't miss the thriving Friday
market.
A Meal for All Occasions
Pubs and hotels ranging from a 16th century
coaching inn to a modern motel offer tasty
fare in a warm friendly atmosphere, so typical
of traditional Chatteris hospitality.
Whether you fancy a lunchtime drink in the
pub with friends or an evening meal in more
formal elegant surrounds - the choice is
up to you. Charming country inns, frequently
offering home-cooked meals, can be found
in the nearby villages.
Growing Families
Competitively-priced housing, much of it
newly constructed, is a known feature of
Fenland, and Chatteris is no exception.
This makes it especially attractive to couples
with young families who welcome the abundance
of baby and play groups, the two excellent
county primary schools and Cromwell Community
College.
Sports and Hobbies
Whether you play football, tennis, badminton
or bowls, the chances are there's a sports
club ready to welcome you.
You could microlight or parachute from Chatteris
Airfield or have a go at any of the adventurous
activities offered at the Mepal Outdoor
Centre, just outside town. Social groups,
concerts or the performing arts are on hand,
so why not give one or two a try?
Wildlife
Because Fenland is Britain's biggest wetland,
the area around Chatteris abounds with rivers,
canals, lakes, reservoirs and drains, rich
in bird life and havens for anglers.
The Ouse Washes and Welney nature reserves
offer a unique wildlife spectacular from
November to February when hundreds of over-wintering
wild swans and ducks make it their temporary
home. Well-stocked waterways offer a quality
and variety of course fishing which attract
anglers from far and wide, while boating
enthusiasts enjoy navigating some of the
200 miles of natural and manmade rivers
which crisscross Fenland.
Out and About
The historic university town of Cambridge
and the cathedral cities of Ely and Peterborough
all lie within close driving distance of
Chatteris, all three with rail services
to London.
Country ramblers and cyclists can explore
the network of footpaths and cycle tracks
in the Chatteris area, many of which follow
the routes of centuries-old droves under
open skies with low horizons and gently
moving waterways.
